The San Diego Chargers placed wide receiver Keenan Allen on injured reserve and activated rookie defensive end Joey Bosa, their top overall pick in this year's draft to the 53-man roster.

Chargers coach Mike McCoy confirmed to reporters on Monday that Allen suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in Sunday's season-opening loss at Kansas City.

It marks the second straight season that Allen has had his season ended prematurely by injury. Allen was limited to eight games in 2015 after suffering a lacerated kidney.

A fourth-year wide receiver out of California, Allen had six catches for 63 yards when he crumbled to the turf late in the first half Sunday. He was in obvious pain and had to be carted off the field.

Allen's absence robs San Diego of its No. 1 wide receiver. Allen was on his way to a career year last season with 67 receptions for 725 yards and four touchdowns before the kidney injury. He also suffered a broken collarbone late in his second season.

Bosa sat out the season opener with what the team said was a minor hamstring injury.

The No. 3 overall pick out of Ohio State, Bosa missed all of training camp and the preseason while embroiled in a contract dispute with the club.

Bosa finally signed with the club at the end of August, inking a four-year contract worth a reported $26 million, including a $17 million signing bonus.

The Chargers were granted a roster exemption due to the lengthy holdout of Bosa, who is eligible to play in Sunday's home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
