NHL: Washington 6, New York Islanders 2

WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Alex Ovechkin returned from a two-game injury absence with a pair of goals Tuesday, propelling the Washington Capitals over the New York Islanders 6-2.

Ovechkin, who missed time with a shoulder injury, scored during a pair of Washington power plays in the second period, when the Capitals struck for five goals overall.

The Washington star also notched an assist while Marcus Johansson and Tom Wilson each contributed a goal and an assist as the Caps reeled off a third straight win.

John Carlson and Alexander Urbom also scored and Nicklas Backstrom contributed three assists.

Braden Holtby stopped 34-of-36 shots for Washington.

John Tavares and Kyle Okposo each netted a goal and an assist for the Islanders, who started a four-game road trip with a loss.

Evgeni Nabakov yielded all six Caps goals on 39 shots.
