MLB: San Diego 4, St. Louis 2

SAN DIEGO, May 21 (UPI) -- Jason Marquis won his fifth straight start Monday, yielding one earned run over six innings in San Diego's 4-2 triumph over St. Louis.

Marquis (6-2) allowed two runs overall on three hits, overcoming four walks while striking out three for the Padres, who notched their fifth victory in seven games.

Dale Thayer, Joe Thatcher and Luke Gregerson combined for 1 1/3 frames of scoreless relief and Huston Street racked up his 11th save as San Diego claimed the first of a three-game set.

Chris Denorfia (3-for-4) singled home Carlos Quentin with the tying run in the sixth inning, then scored the go-ahead tally when Jesus Guzman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Cardinals starter Shelby Miller (5-3) absorbed the loss, letting in three runs on five hits through 5 2/3 innings.

Jon Jay went 2-for-4 for National League Central-leading St. Louis.
