Sharapova in, Kerber out at Sony Open

MIAMI, March 24 (UPI) -- Third-seeded Maria Sharapova rolled to a win but sixth-seeded Angelique Kerber took a tumble Sunday in third-round play at the Sony Open in Miami.

Sharapova, who has been the Miami runner-up four times, continued her strong play after winning this month's event at Indian Wells, unleashing five aces in her 6-4, 6-2 victory over 29th-seeded fellow Russian Elena Vesnina.

Germany's Kerber fell to 28th-seeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-0.

Cirstea will next face Serbian Jelena Jankovic, who upended 11th-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova 7-6 (9-7), 6-4.

No. 21 seed Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic earned the opportunity to face Sharapova in the Round of 16 with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) decision over 14th-seeded Russian Maria Kirilenko.

Also logging victories at Crandon Park Sunday were 12th-seeded Ana Ivanovic, eighth-seeded Italian Sara Errani, No. 15 Roberta Vinci of Italy and 32nd-seeded Frenchwoman Alize Cornet.
