NHL: Colorado 6, Calgary 3

CALGARY, Alberta, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Paul Stastny delivered two of the three goals Colorado scored in the final 2:40 Thursday that lifted the Avalanche over Calgary 6-3.

Colorado's John Mitchell and Calgary's Jiri Hudler both scored twice while the teams were battling to a 3-3 tie over the first two periods.

Most of the third period turned out to be a tense goaltending duel, but Stastny broke that up by scoring his first two goals of the season.

The first one came on the power play and the second one followed 1:29 later on a wrist shot. P.A. Parenteau added an empty-net goal with 48 seconds remaining.

Colorado's six-goal outburst came after the Avalanche had managed a league-low 10 goals in their first six games. Colorado snapped a three-game skid.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 25 saves for Colorado, six of which came during the final period. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped just 16-of-21 shots.
