Federer, top seeds move ahead in Shanghai

SHANGHAI, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, the world's top three ranked players, advanced after Wednesday's play at the Shanghai Rolex Masters.

Federer, seeking to retain the world No. 1 ranking, beat Lu Yen-Hsun 6-3, 7-5. He lost 10 points on serve, including three in the first set in which he won all 16 of the points when he was good on his first serve.

Djokovic, with a chance to unseat Federer, easily handled Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-2 in 54 minutes. Djokovic lost just five points on serve in the entire match and converted three of his five break chances.

Murray, the two-time defending champion of the event, advanced in a walkover when Florian Mayer couldn't play due to a rib injury.

The second round was completed and none of the top eight seeds, who all had first-round byes, lost Wednesday. However, five in the second tier of seeds were eliminated.

That included No. 12 Milos Raonic and 14th-seeded Kei Nishikori, who played Sunday for the Japan Open title. Raonic was beaten by Marcos Baghdatis 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3) in a 2-hour, 40-minute match. Nishikori fell to Sam Querrey 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, managing just two break-point chances over the last two sets.

Also ousted were 11th-seeded Richard Gasquet, No. 15 Gilles Simon and 16th-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Fourth-seeded Tomas Berdych stopped Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-3; No. 5-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Benoit Paire 7-6 (9-7), 7-5; sixth-seeded Janko Tipsarevic got by Viktor Troicki 6-2, 7-6 (7-3); and 13th-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka edged Denis Istomin 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Unseeded players advancing were Alexandr Dolgopolov, Radek Stepanek, Tommy Haas and Feliciano Lopez.
