MLB: Detroit 7, Boston 5

BOSTON, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder bashed back-to-back homers during a five-run fifth inning Wednesday, powering the Detroit Tigers to a 7-5 win over Boston.

With the scored tied 1-1, Alex Avila and Jhonny Peralta led off the fifth with back-to-back singles and advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Ramon Santiago. Avila scored on a single by Austin Jackson that sent Peralta to third.

Peralta scored on a groundout by Quintin Berry and Jackson took third on a wild pitch. Cabrera drove in Jackson with his 26th home run and Fielder followed immediately with a solo shot, his 17th.

It was the third time this season Cabrera and Fielder recorded consecutive home runs.

Rick Porcello (8-6) gained the win despite allowing four runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. Jose Valverde racked up his 21st save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

The victory allowed the Tigers to avoid a three-game sweep and keep pace three games behind the American League Central-leading Chicago White Sox, who beat Minnesota earlier Wednesday.

Carl Crawford homered while Cody Ross went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Boston.
