Tsonga, Isner inch up tennis Top 10

LONDON, April 9 (UPI) -- Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and John Isner, key players in the U.S.-French Davis Cup series last weekend, each move up in the world tennis rankings this week.

Isner defeated Tsonga in four sets Sunday to lock up the best-of-five quarterfinal series for the United States. Isner had a pair of wins in France. Tsonga had opened the series with a win over Ryan Harrison.

Those results were enough to allow Tsonga to get by David Ferrer and into fifth in the world rankings. Ferrer slips despite going 2-0 in his Davis Cup matches during the weekend. Tsonga gains 65 rankings points while Ferrer remains at 4,700.

Isner edges past Juan Martin del Potro and matches his career high No. 10 ranking. Del Potro was also 2-0 in Davis Cup play last week. Del Porto earns 40 points but Isner receives 80 and passes del Potro in the rankings.

Novak Djokovic is No. 1 for a 42nd week. He has 12,670 points. Rafael Nadal (9,935) is second with Roger Federer (9,035) in third and Andy Murray (8,040) fourth.

Tsonga has 4,735 rankings points and Ferrer has 4,700. Tomas Berdych remains ranked seventh with 3,810 points with Janko Tipsarevic (2,820) in eighth and Mardy Fish ninth with 2,725. Isner is only 15 points behind Fish but del Porto is just 10 back of Isner.

Fish and Isner are the only Top 10 players in an ATP tournament this week. They are the top seeds at the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship in Houston.
