Vinci advances with three-set win

BUDAPEST, Hungary, July 8 (UPI) -- Top seed Roberta Vinci need a third set Friday to gain a semifinal berth at the Budapest Grand Prix tennis tournament in Hungary.

Vinci rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory over Zuzana Kucova. She totaled five breaks with two in each of the second and third sets. She dropped only eight points on serve in the third set despite losing her serve once.

She'll go against third-seeded Klara Zakopalova in Saturday's semifinals. Zakopalova won the first 10 games in a 6-0, 6-4 decision over Kateryna Bondarenko that took just 59 minutes.

Fifth-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues was ahead 4-6, 7-5, 3-0 when No. 2-seeded Sara Errani retired. Medina Garrigues had won 13 of the 16 points of the third set when the match was stopped.

No. 7-seeded Irina-Camelia Begu ran off the first eight games in her 6-0, 6-3 win over Estrella Cabeza Candela. She won 60 percent of the points on serve despite dropping serve once.
