NHL: San Jose 4, Los Angeles 3 (OT)

LOS ANGELES, April 26 (UPI) -- Joe Thornton's goal 2:22 into overtime Monday gave the San Jose Sharks a 4-3 win over Los Angeles and a 4-2 first-round playoff series victory.

Devin Setoguchi cruised behind the net on the winning play and passed the puck to Patrick Marleau in the crease. His shot bounced high off Kings goalie Jonathan Quick and landed at the skates of Thornton, who wheeled and fired it in for the game-winner.

Thornton added an assist while Kyle Wellwood, Jason Demers and Dany Heatley also scored for the Sharks, who advance to the Western Conference semifinals.

Antti Niemi turned aside 26-of-29 shots and had to withstand a 5-minute Kings power play late in the game after the Sharks' Jamie McGinn was called for a major charging penalty with less than 4 minutes remaining in regulation.

Justin Williams, Ryan Smyth and Trevor Lewis scored for Los Angeles and Quick ended with 31 saves in the season-ending loss.
