Schnyder advances with upset in Austria

LINZ, Austria, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Patty Schnyder ousted second-seeded Daniela Hantuchova in straight sets Friday in quarterfinal play of the Generali Ladies Linz tennis tournament in Austria.

Schnyder, who ousted No. 8-seeded Klara Zakopalova in the second round, dropped serve just once Friday in topping Hantuchova. She landed just 58 percent of her first serves and won only 58 percent of the points when she got that first serve in, but took three-quarters of the points off her second serve.

Roberta Vinci also recorded her second upset of a seeded player when she defeated No. 9 Sara Errani 5-7, 7-3, 6-4. Vinci piled up seven service breaks in the second and third sets. She'd eliminated third-seeded Alona Bondarenko in the first round.

More to form, sixth-seeded Andrea Petkovic beat Eleni Daniilidou 6-3, 6-2 and seventh-seeded Ana Ivanovic got by Julia Goerges 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.

Schnyder will go against Petkovic and Vinci meets Ivanovic in the semifinals Saturday. The winner of those matches square off Sunday for the tournament title and a $37,000 first-place check.
