Clijsters seeks second straight victory

MONTREAL, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Fifth-seeded Kim Clijsters, coming off her win last week in Cincinnati, advanced Wednesday with a victory over Bethanie Mattek-Sands at the Rogers Cup.

Clijsters defeated Maria Sharapova Sunday for her second championship of the year and moved into the third round Wednesday by rallying for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 triumph.

She will meet Kaia Kanepi in the third round after Kanepi disposed of Sybille Bammer 7-5, 6-2.

French Open champion Francesca Schiavone also moved on, defeating Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2. This is the fifth tournament for Schiavone since she won her first major title in Paris and it is the first time since then she has made it to the third round.

Second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki won over Patty Schnyder 7-5, 7-5; No. 10 Victoria Azarenka was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Maria Kirilenko; and No. 4 Elena Dementieva breezed past Klara Zakopalova 6-2, 6-4.
