Peer falls in Rogers Cup 1st-round upset

MONTREAL, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Kaia Kanepi of Estonia bounced 14th-ranked Israeli Shahar Peer from the Rogers Cup Monday.

Kanepi, who reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals this year, upended Peer 6-3, 6-3 in the first round on the hard courts of Montreal's Uniprix Stadium.

Thirteenth-seeded Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium topped Belarus' Olga Govortsova 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) and Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai rallied to defeat Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 6-7 (1-7), 7-5, 6-3.

Also Monday, Russian Dinara Safina downed Germany's Andrea Petkovic 6-3, 6-3.
