Clijsters reachs Rogers Cup quarterfinals

MONTREAL, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Kim Clijsters breezed into the quarterfinals of the $2 million Rogers Cup with an easy victory over Kaia Kanepi Thursday.

Clijsters, the reigning U.S. Open champion who is seeded fifth, knocked off the big-serving Estonian 6-2, 6-1 on the hard courts at Uniprix Stadium.

Clijsters, who won in Cincinnati last week, faces Russian Vera Zvonareva in the quarterfinals Friday. Zvonareva, who finished second at Wimbledon last month, advanced by eliminating Hungarian Agnes Szavay 6-3, 6-3.

In other action Thursday, 11th-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated seventh-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 1-6, 6-3; 10th-seeded Belarusian Victoria Azarenka beat ninth-seeded Chinese Li Na 6-3, 6-3; and 17th-seeded Marion Bartoli of France ousted Czech qualifier Iveta Benesova 6-0, 6-1.

Azarenka and Bartoli meet Friday.

This week's winner will pocket $350,000.
