NEW YORK, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Max Scherzer tossed six shutout innings and Ryan Raburn homered Monday to pace the Detroit Tigers to a 3-1 decision over the New York Yankees.

Phil Coke and Ryan Perry combined for 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and Jose Valverde picked up his 23rd save despite allowing a run in the ninth, securing a Tigers victory in the first of four games in New York.

Raburn socked a two-run shot in the second off Javier Vazquez (9-9), who yielded just those two runs in four innings of work for New York.

The Yankees fell into a tie with Tampa Bay for first place in the American League East

Former Yankee Johnny Damon, now a member of the Tigers, received loud cheers when introduced in the first inning. Damon was making his first appearance at Yankee Stadium since helping lead New York to a 2009 World Series win.
