MLB: Kansas City 1, New York Yankees 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Bryan Bullington hurled eight scoreless innings to collect his first major league win Sunday and the Kansas City Royals edged the New York Yankees 1-0.

Bullington (1-2), baseball's top overall draft pick nine years ago, limited New York to two hits and a walk while striking out five to get his first win in 20 career starts with four big league teams.

Bullington sported an 0-7 record with a 5.02 career ERA coming into Sunday's game.

Joakim Soria got his 33rd save by tossing a scoreless ninth to preserve the victory and give the Royals a split in their four-game series with the Yankees.

Billy Butler drove in the game's only run with a first-inning single.

A.J. Burnett (9-10) was the hard-luck loser for New York, allowing only one run on four hits in a complete-game effort.

The Yankees' American League East lead over Tampa Bay dwindled to one game with the setback.
