Venus Williams, seeded fourth this week, assured herself of enough ratings points to move to No. 2 in the world when rankings are updated Monday with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Francesca Schiavone. Venus Williams won 62 percent of the points in the second and third sets.

The tournament's second round was wrapped up Wednesday with a pair of matches, including seventh-seeded Jelena Jankovic's 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Ana Ivanovic. Jankovic dropped serve eight times but broke Ivanovic's serve 11 times in 14 games. Ivanovic hurt herself with 12 double faults.

Also, Arantxa Parra Santonja got past Shuai Peng in a tight 1-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.
