MLB: N.Y. Yankees 5, Oakland 3

NEW YORK, April 21 (UPI) -- Andy Pettitte held Oakland to two runs in seven innings Tuesday, helping the New York Yankees beat the Athletics 5-3.

The A's nicked Pettitte for nine hits but he still improved to 2-0. Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.

Johnny Damon had a home run, and he and Brett Gardner each had two RBI for the Yankees. Mark Teixeira also had an RBI and Derek Jeter and Hideki Matsui each had two hits and scored a run.

The Yankees, playing their first night game at the new Yankee Stadium, got their third win in their last four games.

Mark Ellis had two RBI for the A's. Kurt Suzuki went 4-for-4 and had the other RBI for Oakland.

Dana Eveland (0-1) was the loser after allowing four runs on nine hits in four innings.
