ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., April 14 (UPI) -- Robinson Cano's pinch-hit home run broke a tie in the eighth Monday and the New York Yankees posted an 8-7 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Alex Rodriguez hit his 521st major league home run, tying Ted Williams and Willie McCovey for 15th place on the all-time list.
Cano hit his homer off Al Reyes (1-2) to give the Yankees the lead after the New York bullpen had blown a five-run edge on three home runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Carl Crawford and B.J. Upton hit two-run home runs and Evan Longoria had a solo shot in the seventh.
Cano's first home run of the season gave the win to Brian Bruney (1-0). Mariano Rivera recorded the final four outs to pick up his fourth save.
Derek Jeter, who had missed the previous six contests with a quad injury, returned and had two RBI.
Johnny Damon hit the 23rd leadoff home run of his career and Morgan Ensberg also hit a solo shot for the Yankees. Rodriguez was 4-for-5.
