Weir still leading PGA's season opener

KAPALUA, Hawaii, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Mike Weir shot a 5-under 68 Saturday to remain in the lead after three rounds of the PGA's Mercedes-Benz Championship in Hawaii.

Weir, the 2003 Masters champion who closed last season with a victory, is at 13-under 206 in the PGA Tour's 2008 season opener. He had a birdie at the 18th hole Saturday to finish the third round with a one-stroke lead over Nick Watney.

Watney, a first-time winner in New Orleans last season, shot a 6-under 67 Saturday and was at 12-under 207.

Sweden's Daniel Chopra also had a 67 and was tied for third place with Jonathan Byrd (69) at 11-under 208. Stephen Ames posted a 70 and was fifth at 10-under 209.

Jim Furyk (66), Steve Stricker (68), Justin Leonard (69) and Brandt Snedeker (70) were at 9-under 210 and defending champion Vijay Singh (67) led a group of three players at 211.
