NHL: San Jose 2, Anaheim 1 (SO)

ANAHEIM, Calif., Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Joe Thornton scored in the sixth round of the shootout Sunday to give the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 win at Anaheim.

The contest was tied 1-1 after regulation, on goals by Anaheim's Bobby Ryan in the first period and an equalizer by San Jose's Torrey Mitchell, short-handed at 5:13 of the second.

The shootout was set up when neither team scored in the overtime.

With the shootout tied 2-2, Anaheim's Chris Kunitz shot first, but missed the net. Thornton then skated in on net and his wrister beat Jean-Sebastien Giguere over the right pad.

Evgeni Nabokov made 30 saves on 31 shots for the Sharks, who have won three of their last four games.

Giguere stopped 36 of 37 shots in regulation for the Ducks, who have lost three in a row and four of five.

There were no power play goals on 11 combined chances.
