NHL: Washington 7, Toronto 1

TORONTO, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Alex Ovechkin scored two goals Monday, leading the Washington Capitals to a 7-1 rout of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Boyd Gordon, Matt Pettinger, Jeff Schultz, Matt Bradley and Brian Sutherby all got their first goals of the season as Washington grabbed five wins in the month of October for the first time since 2001. Bradley added two assists, and Pettinger and Gordon one each. Michael Nylander had three assists.

Ovechkin has four goals and five assists in his last four games.

Olaf Kolzig made 32 saves as the Capitals won for just the second time in their last eight games.

Alexei Ponikarovsky had the lone goal for Toronto. Vesa Toskala gave up four goals on just 13 shots before being replaced with six minutes to play in the first period.

The Capitals, already playing without team captain Chris Clark and leading defenseman Tom Poti, lost left wing Alexander Semin to a recurring ankle injury.
