"It was tough for me at the beginning of the match to find a good rhythm," Henin said. "I needed to get used to the conditions. But at 5-3 in the second set, I started to play better."

Henin's last loss was against France's Marion Bartoli in the Wimbledon semifinals in July.

Also Thursday, Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska topped last year's Zurich runner-up, Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, 6-3, 6-3; second-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Austria's Sybille Bammer, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5; and Italy’s Francesca Schiavone downed crowd favorite Patty Schnyder, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Hantuchova struggled with a cold.

Schnyder, a native of Basel, captured the Zurich title in 2002 and was the runner-up in 2005.
