Chakvetadze advances in Luxembourg

LUXEMBOURG, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- No. 1-seeded Anna Chakvetadze was a straight-set winner Thursday and earned a quarterfinals slot in the $600,000 Fortis Championships in Luxembourg.

Chakvetadze, ranked No. 5 in the world, was one of five seeded players to earn berths in Friday's quarters. She ran out to a 6-1 first-set win over Meilen Tu and backed down a little before taking the second 7-6 (7-2) and winning the match.

Fourth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova, who beat Zuzana Ondraskova, 6-4, 6-1; No. 5 Marion Bartoli, with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Sybille Bammer; and eighth-seeded Tatiana Golovin, who defeated Francesca Schiavone, 6-3, 6-1, also had straight wins. But sixth-seeded Patty Schnyder needed to come back from a set down for her 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Klara Zakopalova.

Friday's quarterfinal pairings are Chakvetadze versus Bartoli, Golovin against seventh-seeded Ana Ivanovic, Hantuchova playing Schnyder and Vera Zvonareva meeting Victoria Azarenka. Ivanovic, Zvonareva and Azarenka won their second-round matches Wednesday.

The Fortis Championship winner will earn $88,265.
