Henin wins women's U.S. Open

NEW YORK, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Justine Henin won the women's U.S. Open Saturday, beating Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-1, 6-3, for her seventh Grand Slam title.

Henin beat the Williams sisters back-to-back during the tournament and became the first player to do it en route to a Grand Slam title. She eliminated Serena Williams in the quarterfinals and beat Venus Williams in Friday's semifinals.

The top-seeded/world No. 1 Belgian -- also the 2003 U.S. Open champion and last year's runner-up to Russian Maria Sharapova -- did not lose a set during her two-week run.

Henin is 15-2 all-time against the fourth-seeded Kuznetsova, who defeated fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze Friday, but lost in her second U.S. Open final in four years. She won the title in 2004, beating Elena Dementieva for the championship.

Henin beat Kuznetsova in straight sets in last year's French Open final.
