MLB: Toronto 5, LA Angels 4

ANAHEIM, Calif., Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Matt Stairs put Toronto in front with a two-run double in the fifth inning Thursday night and the Blue Jays held off the Los Angeles Angels, 5-4.

The Angels saw their lead over Seattle in the American League West cut to one game.

Toronto trailed by a run going into the fifth, but Stairs drove in Reed Johnson and Lyle Overbay with his double, to give the Blue Jays the lead. Stairs then scored on a throwing error by catcher Ryan Budde.

Vladimir Guerrero homered twice for the Angels, including a solo shot in the eighth that cut the deficit to 5-4.

The win went to Jesse Litsch (5-6), who gave up three runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings. Jeremy Accardo worked a perfect ninth inning for his 25th save.

Los Angeles starter Ervin Santana (5-12) allowed eight hits and five runs over six innings to take the loss.
