MLB: Boston 11, Chi. White Sox 3 (Game 1)

CHICAGO, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Jason Varitek drove in four runs Friday afternoon as the Boston Red Sox trounced the Chicago White Sox, 11-3, in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Varitek hit an RBI single in the fourth and a three-run homer in the ninth -- his 11th homer of the season.

Boston’s Mike Lowell had two runs, three hits and two RBI. Bobby Kielty hit a pair of sacrifice flies, three players had one RBI each, and five had two hits for the Red Sox, who have won three of their last four games.

Winner Josh Beckett (16-5) became the first pitcher this season to win 16 games, giving up three earned runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Chicago’s Josh Fields hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Jermaine Dye had an RBI, and Darin Erstad and A.J. Pierzynski had two hits each for the White Sox, who have dropped two of three.

The loser was starter Jon Garland (8-10).
