Roddick moves into third round in Ohio

MASON, Ohio, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- No. 3 seed American Andy Roddick was a second-round winner Tuesday at the $2.45 million Western & Southern Financial Group Masters.

Roddick defeated unseeded Chilean Fernando Verdasco in Tuesday's second round 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. He beat Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero in last year's finale here. Roddick also won here in 2003 and was the 2005 runner-up to Roger Federer.

Ferrero advanced Tuesday by beat Belgian qualifier Olivier Rochus 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.

Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis beat Britain's Andy Murray 6-1, 6-2; Argentine Juan Martin del Potro beat Argentine Guillermo Canas 6-2, 6-2; and Jarkko Nieminen defeated Spaniard Tommy Robredo, the No. 7 seed, 6-4, 6-1.

Former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt edged Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5). Hewitt, a two-time major winner, final at this in 2002 and 2004.

In evening play, ninth-seeded American James Blake defeated Colombian Alejandro Falla, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, and Croatia's Mario Ancic beat German Tommy Haas 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
