NHL: Atlanta 2, N.Y. Rangers 1

ATLANTA, March 17 (UPI) -- Alexei Zhitnik scored at 2:18 of overtime Friday night to give the Atlanta Thrashers a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers.

It was his first goal in an Atlanta uniform after being acquired from Philadelphia on Feb. 24 in exchange for defenseman Braydon Coburn.

The game went to overtime after 1-1 tie through regulation.

Marian Hossa had a goal and an assist; and Johan Hedberg made a season-high 38 saves on 39 shots for the Thrashers, who have won two of their last three games.

Atlanta has 86 points, is third in the Eastern Conference, and first in the Southeast Division, four points ahead of Tampa Bay.

Sean Avery scored the lone goal; while Henrik Lundqvist stopped 20 of 22 shots for the Rangers, who have dropped two straight and three of four.

New York has 77 points and is one point out of the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference.
