Tiger Woods captures opening match

MARANA, Ariz., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk survived Wednesday's opening round of the Accenture Match Play Championship at Marana, Ariz.

Ernie Els, meanwhile, fell in the first round and joined Adam Scott among the upset victims.

Woods -- seeking his eighth straight triumph on the PGA Tour -- eliminated J.J. Henry in the first round, 3 & 2, setting up a second-round match against South African Tim Clark.

Mickelson was extended to the final hole before defeating Richard Green, 1-up. Furyk, ranked second in the world behind Woods, defeated Brett Quigley, 2 & 1.

Mickelson will take on Justin Rose in the second round while Furyk will meet Chad Campbell.

Els was eliminated by Bradley Dredge, 4 & 3. It was the fourth time in the history of this event Els had lost in the first round.

Scott lost to former PGA champion Shaun Micheel on the third extra hole.

Charles Howell III, this year's leading money winner, also advanced, along with defending champion Geoff Ogilvy.
