NHL: Philadelphia 5, Atlanta 2

ATLANTA, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Simon Gagne, Mike York, Jeff Carter and Alexei Zhitnik scored in the third period Saturday night as the Philadelphia Flyers topped Atlanta, 5-2.

The four-goal barrage helped the Flyers overcome a 2-1 deficit at the start of the period.

Dmitry Afanasenkov had a goal and one assist, and goalie Antero Niittymaki made 32 saves in relief of starter Robert Esche for the Flyers, who won at Atlanta for the second time in six days.

They have split their last four games.

Esche left early in the first period with a neck injury.

Ilya Kovalchuk and Jim Slater scored goals, while Kari Lehtonen gave up four goals on 23 shots for the Thrashers, who have lost two in a row and three of their last four games.

There were no power-play goals on five combined chances.
