NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Reigning champion Lindsay Davenport was a first-round winner and Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova moved into the quarterfinals Tuesday at the Pilot Pen Tennis event.

Davenport won here a year ago by beating Amelie Mauresmo in the final and is a four-time runner-up at this event (1999, 2001-03). She is playing in only her second tournament since returning from a back injury two weeks ago. The former world No. 1 star was sidelined for five months.

Kuznetsova, 21, beat French resident and Russian native Tatiana Golovin 6-0, 2-6, 6-4. Kuznetsova was this year's French Open runner-up to Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne and won the U.S. Open in 2004.
