Nalbandian, Safin win Estoril openers

LISBON, Portugal, May 2 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Argentine David Nalbandian and former world No. 1 Marat Safin were among Tuesday's first-round winners at the Estoril Open in Portugal.

Nalbandian, the 2005 Tennis Masters Cup titlist and 2002 Estoril champion, defeated Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 7-5, 7-5. Safin beat Italian qualifier Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-4.

Safin, a two-time Grand Slam champion and 2004 Estoril runner-up, meets second-seeded fellow Russian Nikolay Davydenko in the round of 16. Davydenko was the 2003 champion.

Four other seeds won Tuesday. No. 4 Frenchman Gael Monfils beat Romanian Razvan Sabau 6-1, 6-2; No. 5 Russian Dmitry Tursunov beat Portuguese lucky-loser Gastao Elias 6-2, 6-1; No. 6 Spaniard Carlos Moya, the 2000 Estoril winner, defeated Brazilian Flavio Saretta 6-3, 6-4; and No. 7 Chilean Nicolas Massu beat Dutchman Raemon Sluiter.
