Nadal, the second seed, came back to top No. 7 Gaston Gaudio of Argentina, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.

"It was my toughest match this week," Nadal said. "He (Gaudio) had beaten me three times on clay before and I knew it would not be easy."

Nadal extended his clay-court match winning streak to 41 consecutive games, third all-time behind Guillermo Vilas (53) and Bjorn Borg (46). Federer ran his overall record in 2006 to 33-1.

On Sunday, he will try for his fifth title of the year and 38th of his career.
