MLB: Texas 5, Detroit 3

ARLINGTON, Texas, April 9 (UPI) -- Brad Wilkerson hit a tie-breaking two-run double in the sixth inning Sunday as Texas beat Detroit, 5-3, handing the Tigers their first loss of the season.

Ian Kinsler and Gerald Laird both had two hits and scored twice. Kevin Mench and Mark Teixeira had two hits apiece, and former Tiger Dmitri Young went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored as Texas avoided a four-game sweep and snapped its own four-game skid.

Winner Vicente Padilla (2-0) gave up three runs and seven hits in six innings with three walks and three strikeouts. Francisco Cordero earned his first save of 2006 by pitching a perfect ninth.

Curtis Granderson went 2-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored, and Craig Monroe went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Loser Kenny Rogers (1-1) was touched for five runs and 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings with one walk and five strikeouts.
