Mauresmo reaches round of 16

MELBOURNE, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Amelie Mauresmo and Marat Safin moved into the round of 16 Friday at the Australian Open.

Mauresmo, seeded second behind Lindsay Davenport, advanced past Ana Ivanovic, 6-2, 7-5. Safin, seeded fourth on the men's side, had to work to get past Mario Ancic, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Mauresmo will play Evgenia Linetskaya in the fourth round after Linetskaya defeated 21st-seeded Amy Frazier, 6-3, 6-4.

On Thursday, Davenport reached the third round along with fellow-American Andy Roddick.

Davenport came from behind and beat Michaela Pastikova of the Czech Republic 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in a match that lasted 102 minutes.

Roddick, seeded second in the men's draw, defeated Britain's Greg Rusedski 6-0, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Lleyton Hewitt of Australia, the No. 3 seed, survived a battle against American James Blake, winning 4-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-0 6-3.

In other women's matches, No. 3 Anastasia Mytskina of Russia moved on by defeating Tzipora Obziler of Israel 6-4, 6-2.

Venus Williams, the eighth seed, scored a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Shuai Peng of China.
