Singh increases lead in world ranking

WASHINGTON, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Vijay Singh's strong finish in Florida's Funai Classic strenghthened his lead at the top of the Official World Golf Ranking.

Singh tied for second in the tournament and has a 13.58 score -- up from 13.48 the previous week -- in the latest computerized ranking released Monday.

Ernie Els is second at 12.08 and Tiger Woods third at 11.46.

Each player is ranked over a two-year period in a system that awards points per tournament, depending on how the player finishes.

Singh has won eight tournaments, finished second twice and has 13 top five finishes this year. He took over the No. 1 spot in early September from Woods, who had held it for more than five years.

Phil Mickelson is ranked No. 4, and Retief Goosen No. 5. Others in the top 10 are Davis Love III, Mike Weir, Padraig Harrington, Stewart Cink and Sergio Garcia.
