Hewitt wins opener in TD Waterhouse Cup

COMMACK, N.Y., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Open and Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt defeated Olivier Mutis 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in the opening round of the $380,000 TD Waterhouse Cup Tuesday.

The Australian Hewitt is seeded No. 2 in the tournament, and also learned Tuesday he will be the fourth seed at next week's U.S. Open. He is now 13-2 on the North American hard court circuit for the year.

Paradorn Scrichipan, the two-time defending tournament champion, rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Kevin Kim, while Dmitry Tursunov upset No. 6 Mario Ancic, 6-1, 6-4.

Other winners at Commack, N.Y., Tuesday were seventh-seeded Joachim Johansson, No. 9 Luis Horna, Igor Andreev, Stefan Koubek, Jarkko Nieminen and Nikolay Davydenko.

The 2004 champion will earn $52,000.
