Wily Mo Pena and Jason LaRue hit solo homers for Cincinnati.

The game was delayed for 54 minutes by rain in the top of the seventh, after which Todd Van Poppel (3-4) came on to pitch for the Reds.

He retired the first two batters, but Sosa swung on a 3-0 pitch and hit it over the left field wall for his 18th homer. Rain began to fall heavily during Sosa's at bat.

Reliever Todd Wellemeyer (1-0) got the win and LaTroy Hawkins earned his 13th save with a one-hit ninth.
