Shingo Takatsu (4-1) began his second inning of relief for the White Sox, but Moises Alou led off the bottom of the ninth with a single. Derrek Lee, who was 3-for-3 with a home run, sacrificed and Michael Barrett was intentionally walked.

Takatsu lost Ramon Martinez on five pitches and Walker batted for Rey Ordonez. Lefthander Damaso Marte replaced Takatsu and Walker battled the count full before Marte was low with ball four.
