Facing a Chicago team that had scored 55 runs in its previous six games, Pavano (7-2) dominated en route to his first shutout in five seasons.

Pavano gave up three doubles, walking one and striking out eight in winning his third straight start. He is 4-0 in his last five starts and has allowed just seven runs over 39 2/3 innings during that span.

Two of Pavano's strikeouts came against Carlos Lee, who went none for four to end his 29-game hitting streak.

Lowell hit his second homer in as many nights and 16th of the season with one out in the fourth off Scott Schoeneweis (5-5), giving the Marlins a 2-0 lead.

Juan Pierre added a two-run single in the fifth as the Marlins snapped a four-game home losing streak.
