San Jose pulled into a tie with Los Angeles for first place in the Pacific Division after rolling to a 5-0 rout in the opener of the

home-and-home series. The finale was played at Staples Center in front of 18,743, the largest hockey crowd in California history.

The Sharks nearly swept the weekend set but squandered three leads. Avery capped the scoring when he fired a shot into an open net after San Jose goalie Evgeni Nabokov lost his stick.

Huet allowed four goals in the opening 42 minutes but stopped the final nine shots he faced. He saved the game for the Kings when he turned away Damphousse's seemingly easy chance at a hat trick with 50 seconds left in the extra period.
