Roddick, 20, the second seed, received a bye in the opening round. He has won 21 of his 23 matches this season, and improved to 41-12. He has won titles on three different surfaces in the last five weeks, and is 16-1 since teamming with new coach Brad Gilbert.

It sets up a match against Greg Rusedski in the third round in a battle of two of the game's hardest servers.

Also winning Wednesday was third seed Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand, who had a 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1 win over Cyril Saulnier of France.

He joined Fernando Gonzalez, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Nikolay Davydenko, Sargis Sargsian, Mario Ancic, Brian Vahaly, Mike Bryan, and Tim Henman, who beat fellow American Paul Goldstein, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, in a match that ended at nearly 1:00 a.m. Thursday morning.
