Chi. Cubs 12, Colorado 9

DENVER, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Sammy Sosa produced a grand slam, his fourth home run in 24 hours, and drove in five runs while Corey Patterson homered twice Sunday as the Chicago Cubs opened an eight-run lead and held on for a 12-9 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

Sosa, who posted his sixth career three-homer game Saturday night, smashed a 2-0 offering 435 feet to right-center field in the seventh for his seventh career grand slam and an 11-3 lead.

The Dominican native, who drove in nine runs Saturday, set a National League record for most RBI in two games with 14, surpassing Nate Colbert (1972) and Mark Whiten (1993), each of whom had 13 during doubleheaders.

Patterson recorded the first multi-homer game of his career, hammering shots in the second and sixth innings, while Fred McGriff and Joe Girardi also homered for Chicago.

Rookie lefthander Steve Smyth (1-0) earned his first major league win, allowing three runs and four hits in six innings in the second start of his career.

Colorado starter Dennis Stark (7-3) took his first loss in seven decisions at home, surrendering seven runs and seven hits in six innings. He allowed four homers, a season high for a Rockies pitcher.
