Montreal 9, Florida 7

MIAMI, April 10 (UPI) -- Michael Barrett delivered a bases-clearing double in a five-run fifth inning Wednesday night and drove in a career-best six runs as the Montreal Expos chased Brad Penny and defeated the Florida Marlins, 9-7.

Penny (1-1) shut out the Expos last week at Olympic Stadium and entered this game with a 6-0 record and 0.82 ERA against Montreal.

But the righthander was tagged for seven runs and seven hits before leaving with swelling in his right index finger after just 4 2/3 innings.

Most of the damage was done by Barrett, who drove in five runs in Monday's opener of the three-game series. He also had a sacrifice fly in the fourth off Penny and belted a two-run homer in the ninth off Vladimir Nunez, who was ordained closer by manager Jeff Torborg earlier in the day.

Barrett has all four of his homers and a11 13 RBI off Florida pitching. He hit just six homers all of last season.

The Expos scored five times in the fifth to break open the game, beginning with a leadoff homer by Chris Truby. Pitcher Carl Pavano singled and Peter Bergeron walked before Jose Vidro sacrificed. Vladimir Guerrero was intentionally walked to load the bases and Lee Stevens brought in a run with a forceout.
