Duke bounces back

DURHAM, N.C., Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Mike Dunleavy and Carlos Boozer each scored 23 points as the top-ranked Blue Devils bounced back from their first loss of the season with an easy 104-79 Atlantic Coast Conference triumph Thursday night.

Duke (13-1, 2-1 ACC) saw its 22-game winning streak end on Sunday in a 77-76 loss at Florida State. That defeat featured an 0-of-6 performance from the free-throw line from Jason Williams and a 5-of-15 shooting performance from Dunleavy.

There were no such problems Thursday as Boozer opened the scoring with a layup 33 seconds into the contest in the wire-to-wire win.


Titan stars undergo surgery

NASHVILLE, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair and running back Eddie George underwent surgery Thursday.

McNair had an operation on his right shoulder, which developed a career-threatening infection last summer. He had a bone spur removed from his throwing shoulder but is expected to be able to throw again in six weeks.

George had loose bodies removed from his right ankle, which bothered him most of the season.


Glenn through for the year

FOXBORO, Mass., Jan. 10 (UPI) --The New England Patriots Thursday suspended veteran receiver Terry Glenn for the remainder of the postseason for what the team said was "multiple unexcused absences" from meetings and practices.

It marked yet another turn south for Glenn, who was suspended for the season's first four games after violating the league's substance abuse policy.

He also was suspended for a game against the New York Jets on Dec.2 and has seen limited time due to what he said was a hamstring


Hewitt faces tough draw in Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Australia, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- If Leyton Hewitt thought chicken pox were bad, he should see his draw at the Australian Open.

The world's top-ranked men's player and the first Australian seeded No. 1 at the tournament since Ken Rosewall in 1976 faces a stacked draw that includes two-time defending champion Andre Agassi and two-time winner Pete Sampras.

When play gets under way next week, the 20-year-old Hewitt, who is recovering from chicken pox, will open with Alberto Martin of Spain.

Sampras, the eight seed, faces Jarkko Nieminen in the opening round while Agassi, the third seed, meets a qualifier.

Jennifer Capriati, the defending women's champion and top seed, kicks off her tournament against Silvija Talaja of Croatia. She has the Belgian duo of Kim Clijsters (seeded fourth) and Justine Henin (sixth) in her half of the draw.


Leslie, Staley, Swoopes head US team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Two-time Olympic gold medalists Lisa Leslie, Dawn Staley and Sheryl Swoopes were among six players named to the United States 2002 World Championship team Thursday.

Chamique Holdsclaw, DeLisha Milton and Natalie Williams, all of whom won Olympic gold in the 2000 Games at Sydney, also were named to the team by USA Basketball.

Leslie, Staley and Swoopes won gold at Sydney and in the 1996 Atlanta Games.

The World Championship will be held in China from Sept. 14-25. The rest of the team will be named later.

Woods baffled by New Zealand greens

PARAPARAUMU BEACH, New Zealand, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods admitted Thursday he was baffled by the greens after finishing the first round of the New Zealand Open six shots off the lead.

Woods made three birdies and four bogeys en route to a 1-under-par 70. Woods thought he deserved better from his round, but admitted his performances on the greens let him down.

Australia's Scott Gardiner led after firing a 7-under 64, which included six birdies and an eagle at the 18th.

Countryman James McLean was a shot off the pace, with Brett Rumford and Steve Alker another shot back.
