March 1 (UPI) -- Traffic on a busy Phoenix highway slowed to a crawl as state troopers and bystanders attempted to capture a pair of dogs running loose in the roadway.

The Arizona Department of Transportation tweeted photos from the scene Wednesday as Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers and concerned travelers attempted to corral the pooches running loose in the northbound lanes of Interstate 17.

Officials said the small white dogs were first spotted in traffic about 11:30 a.m. and traffic was brought to a slow crawl for nearly an hour.

Troopers said one of the dogs was captured on the highway, while the other fled to a nearby mobile home park, where it was captured by residents.

The dogs, which were not injured, were taken to the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control shelter. It was unclear whether officials had identified an owner.
