CHICAGO, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Chicago-area birder Steve Spitzer saw something unusual when he spotted a great horned owl doing the butterfly stoke across Lake Michigan.

The owl was forced in the water after being attacked by two peregrine falcons. Onlookers tried to scare the falcons away while bird rescue was called to the scene. The owl eventually flew off on its own.

Spitzer is a photographer but said he is "a birder at heart."
