Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Saxophonist and bandleader Boyd Raeburn was born this day in 1913 in Faith, S.D. He led an innovative bop band in the 1940s.

Singer Babs Gonzalez was born this day in 1919 in Newark, N.J. He formed his own group, Three Bips and a Bop, in 1946 with Tadd Dameron and Rudy Williams. He made the first recording of "Oop-Pop-A-Da," which later became a hit for Dizzy Gillespie. Gonzalez was a tireless promoter of jazz, and at one time also worked as a chauffeur to actor Errol Flynn. He died in 1980.

Bebop pianist George Wallington was born this day in 1924 in Palermo, Sicily. In the mid-1950s, he led a quintet of future jazz stars whose ranks include Donald Byrd, Paul Chambers, Jackie McLean, Arthur Taylor and Phil Woods.

On this day in 1955, the band that would become Miles Davis's greatest quintet went into the recording studio to cut its first session. That band included Davis, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Jo Jones. The four bebop songs they recorded were "Ah-Leu-Cha," "Two Bass Hit," "Little Melonae" and "Budo," which was a rearrangement of Bud Powell's "Hallucination." Since Davis still was under contract to Prestige Records, these first tracks made for Columbia were released sporadically.

Chico Mendoza's Latin Jazztet is in The Jazz Room this afternoon at William Paterson University's Shea Center for the Performing Arts in Wayne, N.J.

Herbie Hancock's quartet is at the Wolf Den at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn.

Karrin Allyson is at Zanzibar Blue in Wilmington, Del., tonight.

David Benoit, Chris Botti and Brian Culbertson are at the Palace Theater in Cleveland tonight. The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra is at Cleveland's Mentor Fine Arts Center and George Shearing is at Severance Hall as part of the Northeast Ohio Jazz Society's Jazz On The Circle series.

Henry Butler is at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville, Ark., tonight.

The Bird of Paradise in Ann Arbor, Mich., tonight presents "Roots (Routes) of Rhythm," a documentary on Cuban jazz hosted by Harry Belafonte, as part of its Reel Jazz series.

The Asian American Jazz 2002 series features Hide Yoshihashi and Tsukasa Taiko, Jimmy Biala and John Carlos Perea, Jen Shyu and Yoko Noge's Jazz Me Blues with Seiji "Wabi" Yuguchi at Hot House tonight. Kara Kesselring is at Philander's in Oak Park. Lenny King's Chicago Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra is at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn. The Russell Alan Rowe trio is at Pops for Champagne.

On the New Orleans jazz scene... pianist Willie Metcalf is at the Bombay Club. Lionel Ferbos is at Cafe Brasil. New Orleans Streetbeat is at the Crescent City Brewhouse. Tonight's schedule at the 20th anniversary edition of the San Francisco Jazz Festival includes Jane Monheit and the Bill Charlap trio at the Herbst Theatre and a tribute to Benny Goodman featuring Eddie with Bucky Pizzarelli and Joe Locke. It also features Jim Rothermel's Benny Goodman Salute at the Peacock Court at the Mark Hopkins Hotel. Elvin Jones's 75th birth year triggers a performance tonight at Masonic Auditorium featuring his Jazz Machine band and the McCoy Tyner Big Band.
