BBC confirms Jenna Coleman's departure from 'Doctor Who'

By Karen Butler

LONDON, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Jenna Coleman will exit Doctor Who during the science-fiction series' ninth season, which starts Saturday, the BBC confirmed.

Coleman made her debut on the show in 2012 as Oswin Oswald, then returned later that year playing Clara and has continued to play that character since. She initially was the companion of the Eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith, and remained on the show after Peter Capaldi took over as the Twelfth Doctor in 2014.

"Jenna has been absolutely brilliant. I think she's wonderful in the show, and she's my favorite companion," Capaldi said after they had finished taping Season 8.

The BBC said when and how Coleman's Clara will leave the titular time traveler is not being revealed at this point.

"It's official. Jenna Coleman is leaving Doctor Who. We're going to miss you, Jenna," an official Doctor Who Facebook post said Friday.
